in the whale watching hotspot of the Western Cape, South Africa

Boat ride at Walker Bay  Horseriding at Grootbos  Views at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve over Walker Bay

ABOUT GROOTBOS : Grootbos Private Nature reserve is the perfect place for part of a self drive tour South Africa or as a conventions and conferences venue. This privately owned nature reserve consists of 1700 hectares of the hills overlooking Walker Bay with the most breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and the distant Cape of Good Hope. Although the exclusivity of Grootbos is reflected in the prices, the reserve is a playground for guests who appreciate having every whim indulged.  The land is carpeted with pristine fynbos, a unique vegetation type indigenous to the Cape with over 650 different species of native plants. There are huge proteas amongst the many species of wildflowers present.

GROOTBOS EXPERIENCE : Whilst staying at Grootbos, there is a wealth of activities to enjoy and ways to experience the fantastic nature that is all around. Bird watching is fascinating and various smalWhale Watching at Walker Bayl mammals can be seen. You can take a meandering walk through ancient Milkwood forest, with 1000 year old trees still stand, or visit one of the remnant Afro-Montane forests on the reserve. Exploring can take place on foot or with a 4 wheel drive vehicle, or even on horseback with well-schooled horses or ponies.

There are botanical guides who are able to explain the intricacies of the fynbos ecosystems and can introduce the guest  to the fascinating relationships between the insects, birds, mammals and flowering plants.  Specialist guides take guests to explore the tidal rock pools and coastal caves while retelling old stories that hint at the mysteries of early inhabitants and famous shipwrecks along the coast.  Visitors can also spend an afternoon lazing on one of the safe swimming beaches while enjoying a freshly packed picnic.

The cliffs of Walker Bay, right at the doorstep of Grootbos Private Nature Reserve offer the best land based whale viewing in the world. Watch spellbound as mothers, calves and energetic bulls come to within 30 metres of the rocky shoreline.  Boat excursions available to guests include trips to view seals in their thousands, to view great whites in their natural habitat or 40 ton whales within metres of the boat.
