Thomas Baines Nature Reserve
Eastern Cape, South
Africa
Thomas Baines Nature
Reserve is approximately 1000 ha in size, and is situated 15
kms from
Grahamstown. There is a wonderful variety of wildlife with over 40
species. The larger of these include white rhino, black wildebeest,
eland which is the largest antelope in Africa, buffalo and bontebok.
The area is also excellent for bird watching. The terrain consists of bushveld, grassland and plenty of fynbos. There is always an excellent
supply of water provided by the Palmiet River. Apart from game
viewing, Thomas Baines is also enjoyed for fishing (particularly Black
Bass) and boating on Settlers Dam.
There are no standard
accommodation facilities for tourists and occasional visitors, but there
is a hostel for organised educational groups which can accommodate up to
40 persons. There are camping sites, backpackers, hotels and guest
houses at Grahamstown to suit all requirements.
The reserve opens from 07h00 - 17h00 daily. A
small fee is payable for entry. Picnic sites with BBQ facilities,
and ablutions are located at Settlers Dam.
