ABOUT THE RESERVE Djuma Game Reserve is
situated in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve which lies in the Lowveld Savanna
in Mpumalanga. The reserve gently undulates with large areas of
grassland and as well as providing excellent game viewing is also a
scenic and interesting place to visit. As Djuma share s
borders with the Kruger National Park, the wildlife viewing is very
good.
WILDLIFE Wildlife viewing is very
good and the reserve contains 7 of the most highly sought after animals;
lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo (the traditional Big Five) plus
cheetah and wild dog. Other interesting species include jackal
(black-backed and side-striped), hyena, African civet, genets,
mongooses, African wild cat, and caracal. Antelope species include
wildebeest, Tsessebe, duiker, impala, kudu, nyala, bushbuck etc. Other
favourites include monkeys, baboons, badgers, hippos etc.
BIRDLIFE Twitchers will be in their
element as Djuma Game Reserve contains over 300 bird species. Ostrich,
kori bustard, wooly-necked stork, marabou stork, hadedas, secretary
birds and the black-headed and grey heron are often to be found. Birds
of prey include Wahlberg's eagle, African hawk eagle, black-breasted
snake eagle, bateleur, tawny eagle, steppe eagle, buzzards, goshawks,
the gymnogene, falcons, kestrels etc. There are 9 types of owl and many
types of kingfishers, bee-eaters, rollers, hornbills, barbets etc.
ACTIVITIES Early morning and late
afternoon / evening game drives in open vehicles are conducted daily.
After breakfast there are mid morning activities available, such as a
bush walk with an
experienced game ranger where you will see the smaller things such as
animal tracks, a diverse array of insects, chameleons, spiders etc and
learn about culinary and medicinal uses of various plants. Cultural
visits to the local village are also offered where you can interact with
the locals and where traditional practices are still strongly in place.
GETTING THERE There are a range of
flights which will get you to Kruger Mpumalanga Airport (KMIA) and once
there you can be transported by road to Djuma Game Reserve. If you are
self driving, then you should get to Acornhoek (just south of Klaserie)
and then follow the signs to Gowrie Gate at the Sabi Sands private game
reserve on the D406. From Gowrie gate, follow directions to the
particular lodge you are staying at; Vuyatela, Galago or Bush Lodge.
